Police investigate shooting of U.S. Marine in Aurora, fellow Marine in custody

A U.S. Marine was shot by a colleague in an Aurora condo early this morning.

The victim, who has not been identified, is in "very serious" condition, according to Aurora police.

The incident happened just after midnight in the 300 block of Granby Way, said Bob Friel, an Aurora Police Department spokesman.

The victim was taken to a local hospital and the suspected shooter, 25-year-old Barton Enoch, is in custody, Friel said.

Enoch was just activated to duty with the Marines on Wednesday.

Investigators believe alcohol was involved. The gun has been recovered as evidence in the case.

In 2004, Enoch, an 18-year-old at the time, was arrested in Larimer County and charged with illegal weapon possession, and underage possession and consumption of alcohol, according to court records.

The weapons charge was dismissed by prosecutors. Enoch pleaded guilty to underage drinking. He was sentenced to 12 months of unsupervised probation and 24 hours community service.

The Marine Corps is aware of the incident and a representative is working with police.

Enoch is being held on suspicion of second-degree assault. Bond has been set at $50,000.

There were six people, all Marines, in the condo at the time of the shooting.

Everyone is being cooperative, Friel said.

"There was no altercation or confrontation," Friel said. "It's a tragic incident."
