What Types of Documents Are Public Record in Colorado?
In Colorado, there are several types of records available to the public. These include marriage records, divorce records, birth certificates, death certificates, bankruptcies, liens and criminal records. According to VitalRec.com, official vital records were not kept in the United States until the early 1900s. Vital records contain information such as the name of the individual, the county and state the event took place in and the date in which the event occurred.
Marriage and Divorce
Marriage records are public record in Colorado. This document records the marriage of the parties involved along with their name, the date of the marriage and the county and state in which they were married. Divorce documents are also considered public record in Colorado. In order to obtain a copy of a divorce decree, you must contact the office of vital statistics in the county in which the divorce occurred. In order to expedite the search, it may be necessary to include the full names of the husband and wife, the date of the divorce, the purpose for which the information is being requested, the driver's license number, name and address of the person requesting the information.
Birth and Death
In Colorado, birth records are considered public information. A birth record contains the information regarding the birth of a child in the United States. A birth record contains information such as the maiden name of the mother, the name of the father, the name of the baby, the date in which the birth took place and the county and state in which the child was born. In some states, the birth records contain additional information such as the parent's birthplace, the race of the parents, the address of the parents at the time of the baby's birth and the number of children the parents have. A death record is also a form of public record in Colorado. A death record states the name of the deceased, the place where the death occurred, the date the death occurred and the cause of death.
Bankruptcy and Liens
Information pertaining to an individual that has filed bankruptcy through the court system is a matter of public record in Colorado. The information that is available is the name of the person that filed bankruptcy, the date the case was filed and the county and state names where the case was filed. The court documents also show in which manner the bankruptcy was filed (Chapter 7, 11 or 13). Property liens are public records as well and are available through the courthouse in the county where the property is located. This public record shows who filed the lien, the name of the person the lien was filed against and the address of the property.
